In Milwaukee, [http://www.wmse.org/ WMSE 91.7] played punk & hardcore. Marky D. had a show Wednesday nights from 9 to midnight…
In Waukesha at WCTC there were a few punks that used the school's (cable) radio station to play punk & hardcore.
UW-Waukesha had an “alternative” radio station called WYRE.
The Mainstreem Metal Shop did radio shows on the Crusher AM 1340 in Milwaukee. It was the AM sister station of WLZR. The got in trouble for simulcasting the same as the FM so they did the Crusher. The show was M-F 9-10pm. One night was Thrash Metal, one Death Metal, one Hardcore, one Traditional Metal and one Alternative Metal. The Crusher had great commercials, In your favorite opera metal voice: Your on the Crusher thirteen-fourty Crusher rules yeeeaaaahhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!
Punk radio shows in Madison included Tonya Hyde's “Cruelest Cuts” and Johnny Ginsu's “Open Mind Surgery” on station WORT 89.9. This was in the mid-80s. “Johnny” was reported to have one of the best punk record collections in the country, though he has since sold them, so this can't be proven. He now runs Jolly Bobs, a Jamaican restaurant and bar on Williamson St.
Back in 1986 I was a DJ on WYRE at UW-Waukesha. Unfortunately, we only broadcasted over the local cable system. As a result, I doubt we had no more than a handful of listeners at any one time. Needless to say, we had a lot of fun with the station's format. I enjoyed playing a lot of late 70's punk (on vinyl, mind you) as well as interviewing friend's bands. In a way, the station was the podcasting of the 80's. – Peter Flessas
Around 1988 the guys from Cleveland Bound Death Sentence were doing shows on the cable radio station… Was that WYRE? – Pete Prodoehl 07:26, 29 Dec 2005 (PST)
I had a show on WYRE in the '87-'88 neighborhood, too. Mike Barsch of Sodomy Law and I did a hardcore show for 0 listeners. We eventually created the fictional and satirical characters of White Mike and Aryan Andrew. This was done in response to all the skinhead crapola that was going on at the time. Apparently at least one member of CBDS did not appreciate our humor and wrote a bunch of nastiness about us in the station log book. Good to hear they were not so self-righteous as to resist the temptation of theft. Haha. –Andrew
I think it was more that someone didn't like Mike personally than your social commentary on the Nazi skinhead issue. And who is to say the same CBDS member who stole the records is the same who wrote in the log book. – Dave Kaz 17:55, 8 Mar 2006 (PST)
My brother, Jake and one of his friends used to host the WYRE show on Saturday or Sunday mornings/afternoons (?) for a lengthy duration. However, this is when WYRE made the crossover to cable-only radio from broadcast, circa 1991-2? I think Mike and Andrew got him started and then left him the reigns. – Matthew Pickard 10:05, 28 Dec 2006 (PST)
